Barley, wheat and rye make up the basis of malt. These grains are germinated, dried and roasted to make up the basic character and colour of Neubourg.
We are especially proud that our affiliated Limburg grain farmers have united in Triligan under a unique initiative that focuses on sustainability.
Two types of locally grown Reijmerse hops give Neubourg Pilsner its unique taste: Mercur hops for the delicious bitterness and 100% organic Hallertauer traditio hops for the fantastic floral aromas.
Both these Reijmerse hops are carefully grown in a truly environmentally friendly way by the Wouters family in Reijmerstok and harvested during the Hop Walk. Harvested on the second Sunday of September by approx. 800 volunteers who feel sympathy for the brewery’s philosophy. (Note: the hop is harvested on the 2nd Sunday of September, the Hop walk is on the next day).. Everybody is welcome to join in, so come on down next time!
The main component of any beer is water and a good pilsner needs especially soft water in order for the malt flavours to stay clean and fresh. Luckily, we have our very own water at the Gulpener brewery, purified by marl (limestone) and drawn at 12° C from 500-year old wells set deep in the Limburg Hills.
Our water is as much a part of the taste of our beer as any of the other ingredients. Any water left over after production is cleaned by our bioreactor and reused.
